original jazz at the intersection of gospel and art-rock

About :.: Bio :.: Schedule :.: Video :.: Audio :.: Contact

The Moshier-Lebrun Collective has been a part of the Chicago music scene since its formation in early 2007. Best described as modern jazz at the intersection of gospel and art-rock, this band grooves with soul and intellect.

Josh Moshier (piano) and Mike Lebrun (saxophone) first began playing together as students at Northwestern University. It was there that they founded their 4-piece group with the objective of playing melody-driven original tunes that reflect their collective musical backgrounds. Their music has been described by saxophonist John Wojciechowski as "melodically accessible, but at the same time harmonically smart," combining modern jazz language with gospel and art rock influences, among others.

Mike Lebrun has performed in Chicago with such groups as The Red Hot Organ Trio, Bob Perna & Persistance, and The Temptations. Josh Moshier's music has been performed by the Joel Spencer Quartet, Dick Oatts & the Northwestern University Jazz Ensemble, and his arrangements have been published by Hal Leonard. Josh performs with the Max Krucoff Trio, the rock band Detagoh, and he leads and composes for an 11-piece jazz ensemble called One Louder. Mike and Josh were recently selected to present their music at the 2008 Jazz Composers Symposium in Tampa, FL, where Mike's tune "Jambo" won the prize for "Best Small Group Composition."

Mike Lebrun grew up on the east coast of South Florida. His plunge into music began with the alto saxophone in the sixth grade. As Mike's musical passion evolved, he found the Alexander Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, FL for his final years of high school. While attending the Northwestern University school of music, he gained exposure to both classical and jazz playing, studying extensively with Frederick L. Hemke and John Wojciechowski, respectively. A summer stint on a Royal Caribbean liner developed Mike's doubling on flute and clarinet. Mike now resides in and perform throughout the Chicago area. Mike and Josh were recently selected to present their music at the 2008 Jazz Composers Symposium in Tampa, FL, where Mike's tune "Jambo" won the prize for Best Small Group Composition.

Max attended Northwestern University (2003-2007) where he studied with Chicago jazz great Joel Spencer. Although naturally left-handed, Max had been following convention and playing right-handed drums. Due to musical frustration in his first year of college, however, he taught himself to play left-handed, switching his entire drum set around. By his senior year, Max had made the university's top jazz ensemble and combo and was featured on two of the university's CD releases ("Groove Assessment," 2005, and "Extra Credit," 2007--(read a review). As an undergraduate, Max had the opportunity to learn from and perform with artists such as Jim McNeely (Grammy Nominee), Chris Potter, Conrad Herwig, Bob Mintzer, Rufus Reid, Ron Blake, Dennis Carroll, Dana Hall, and George Fludas. Currently, Max plays professionally in the Chicago area. He performs regularly with vocalist Erin McDougald and the Joan Hickey Trio. He also plays in and/or has recorded with groups in other musical genres, like Jon Johnson's Funhouse (rock/blues), The Hubble Funk-o-Scope (funk...duh), Alice's Dark Country (country/bluegrass), Tim Andrews (pop/rock), and The Red Hot Organ Trio (jazz).
